Article of the Day 2/27/17

I really like the article of the day for today. The truth takes time and is hard to find. I wholeheartedly agree with this. I have realized as I get older that the truth is a fickle thing. It alludes most of us our whole life. There are very few things that you can know are true. We can only believe most things to be real. In the science community there are changes constantly in what we know as "true". Our understanding is always changing. There are researches that ask a question and answer it one way. Then another credible research comes and answers the question the exact opposite way. We see this constantly in what is health. Smoking was good, now it is not. Carbs were good, now they are not. Protein was bad, now it is not. Being skinny was bad, now it is not. Truth is so illusive that the real meaning of the word is often lost because of the over use of it in wrong situations.

Child's Development and Play Op Ed

Child’s Development and Play

Educators are taking away play and focusing on a more academic approach to school. This, however, limits the time where the children can learn things for themselves. The school systems are starting to use technology more and even teaching children to type instead of writing. Losing skills like writing in the classroom will not allow a child the opportunity to learn the art. It is also proven that when learning writing and forming the words letter by letter will help the children remember what is being taught better.

Children are most directly affected by the actions taken to limit or take away play time. By limiting their play it limits the creative time that a child gets. As a child, the main source of learning is plays. Everything a child does in play can bring up new observations or questions that help them learn about the world.

This problem is particularly big in the United States. In other countries, like Germany, they have instituted programs to get children outside and learning. In Germany, preschool has a lot of the time outside. They teach the kids archery and let them explore the forest. This gives the students time to learn and grow by themselves.

The time to take action is now! If we allow children to not have creative time we will lose an aspect of our culture in a matter of a few generations. Cursive has been taken out of school because it is considered unnecessary. The art of writing is extremely important! Writing will probably never go away completely, but if we are not teaching our students the value of art and writing it will be lost in future generations.

This is a very important issue that should gain a lot of focus. In the middle ages, after the age of Rome, the art lost a realism aspect to it. Rome had so much to give but the art digressed from that point on. Our future is a future of children regressing and losing some of these beautiful forms of art because they are not allowed the opportunity to grow through play. They do not have the ability to develop a creative mind which is already an attribute that is hard to find.

We can fix this. Maybe not change what is being taught in the classrooms but we have the opportunity to teach the children ourselves.

topic post #2

As I have started researching I have decided that I much rather write about creativity in elementary school. This will allow me to have a slightly wider range for my research and allow me to more easily find research to develop a thesis off of this.

Article of the Day 2/20/17

In Utah there is a certain cultural norm that women are supposed to stay home and raise the children. This however is not the case for every person. Some women have a better education than their spouse or do not have a spouse. In both cases wouldn't it be unwise for these women to sit at home?? The touch of sarcasm in the article was good and strong enough for me to notice. I personal want to be a stay at home mother. I want to do this for my own reasons, but that is not stopping me from getting my degree. I am even considering after my bachelors to get an MBA once I graduate from UVU with my bachelors in Business Management. I believe that women and men should try to their best ability to get an education for their family so that they can raise a healthy family. I want to be a stay at home mother because I was raised that way and I believe the way that is easiest to raise a child to turn out well is to do it with your own hands. Though some women do not want a family. I think that this is good too. People should not be able to decide whether or not a women can work for the same salary as her male counterpart.

topic post #1

I have been considering a few topics. The one that I am leaning to is the elimination of art classes in elementary schools. I want to write on this topic for two reasons: I love children and I love art. I think that writing about this topic will be interesting.

This is my Haiku that relates to "She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted."

Given a warning.
World determined her self worth.
She never gave up.

Article of the Day 2/8/17

I disliked this video of Simon Sinek. I understand where he is coming from and I understand that a lot of my generation has a sense of entitlement but that is not all of the Millennials. Myself and other have worked incredibly hard to get where we are. I do agree that it is not necessarily our fault. My generation is this way because of how we are raised. But each generation is changed by their parents generation. The way he started the video sounded as though Sinek was blaming all of our entitlement feelings on ourselves. Then he blames parents for the entitlement. Then he changes it to social media and technology being the problem. I do agree with him on some of the topics, especially with the stress part. When I get social anxiety then I look down at my phone. Phones should be put away for sometime, not used as often as they are.

Article of the Day 2/6/17

In the article "Men confess what feminine things they'd do if stereotypes didn't exist" it talks about men being afraid to express how they really feel. The men interviewed said that they would like to be able to paint their nails, or wear skirts. I am unsure how accurate this survey is because I do not think that all men do not follow the masculine stereotype.

My brother and his fiancee will go get manicures or wear face masks. It is not feminine. My brother understands that there needs to be a balance between the two. A friend of mine that is trying to discover his gender preference told me that at a conference he went to they we helping them balance out their masculinity and femininity. This conference was a place where these guys that are all figuring their lives out could work together and try to understand themselves. I personally think that this friend and my brother are right. There are some stereotypes pertaining to gender that become hard to overcome.

On the feminine side, sports are for guys and same with t-shirts. I love t-shirts and it is not a feminine thing to wear. I believe that the only thing that stops us from breaking these stereotypes is ourselves. We can be out of the normal.
